🔥 BEFORE WE ARGUE ABOUT TORAH, WE MUST FIRST DEFINE IT
What if the word many have been taught to fear is actually the word Scripture uses to describe the instruction of a loving Father?
The debate over whether Torah has been abolished cannot be understood until we first answer a more foundational question:
What is Torah?
Before discussing grace, commandments, obedience, or the New Covenant, we must allow Scripture to define its own terms.
If our definition of Torah is wrong at the beginning, our conclusions about Torah may also be wrong at the end.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
📜 1. TORAH IS MORE THAN A LEGAL CODE
The Hebrew word Torah — תּוֹרָה is commonly translated “law,” but its meaning includes instruction, teaching, and direction.
It is related to the Hebrew verb yarah, which can convey the idea of teaching or directing.
Torah, therefore, is not merely a list of prohibitions.
It is authoritative instruction showing a people how to walk.
In Scripture, Torah may refer to:
🔹 A particular instruction
🔹 A body of priestly teaching
🔹 The Law of Moses
🔹 The first five books of Scripture
Context determines which meaning is intended.
📖 Proverbs 1:8 (KJV)
“My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.”
The word translated “law” in this passage is Torah.
This is obviously not describing the national legal code of Israel. It refers to the instruction given by a mother.
That alone demonstrates why reducing every occurrence of Torah to the modern idea of a courtroom statute misses the breadth of the Hebrew word.
📌 TORAH IS INSTRUCTION WITH AUTHORITY—NOT INSTRUCTION WITHOUT OBLIGATION.
The lexical distinction matters.
Calling Torah “instruction” does not erase its meaning as “law.” Both concepts are legitimate, and Scripture determines the emphasis through context.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
📖 2. THE FIVE BOOKS: A STORY BEFORE A STATUTE
When Torah refers to the Pentateuch, it encompasses the first five books of Scripture.
🌎 GENESIS — BERESHIT
Creation, humanity, the fall, the patriarchs, and Yahuah’s promises.
🌊 EXODUS — SHEMOT
Deliverance from Egypt, covenant, the Ten Words, and the tabernacle.
🔥 LEVITICUS — VAYIKRA
Holiness, sacrifices, priesthood, purity, and appointed worship.
🏜️ NUMBERS — BEMIDBAR
Wilderness testing, rebellion, provision, judgment, and the ordering of the congregation.
📜 DEUTERONOMY — DEVARIM
Covenant renewal, remembrance, obedience, and the call to choose life.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
These books certainly contain commandments.
But they also contain:
✨ Creation
🤝 Covenant
🌊 Deliverance
⚖️ Judgment
❤️ Mercy
🔥 Holiness
🏕️ Wilderness testing
👑 Divine government
📖 The history of a people learning to walk with Yahuah
Therefore:
📌 THE TORAH IS NOT SIMPLY A RULEBOOK DROPPED FROM HEAVEN.
It is the account of Yahuah forming a covenant people and teaching them His ways.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
⛓️➡️🕊️ 3. DELIVERANCE CAME BEFORE SINAI
The order of events in Exodus is extremely important.
Yahuah did not tell Israel:
“Keep My commandments perfectly, and then I will rescue you from Egypt.”
He rescued them first.
Then He brought them to Sinai.
📖 Exodus 19:4 (KJV)
“Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.”
Notice the sequence:
🌊 DELIVERANCE → 🤝 COVENANT → 📜 INSTRUCTION
Only after delivering Israel does Yahuah establish the covenant and reveal its instructions.
The pattern is therefore not:
❌ Obey perfectly so that I might rescue you.
It is:
✅ I have rescued you; now learn how to live as My people.
📖 Deuteronomy 6:24 (KJV)
“And Yahuah commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Yahuah our Elohim, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.”
The commandments were given for Israel’s good, not as meaningless restrictions.
That does not mean obedience was optional.
It means obedience existed within a covenant relationship initiated by divine mercy.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
🤝📜 4. TORAH IS COVENANT INSTRUCTION
A covenant is a binding relationship established through promises, obligations, and defined terms.
At Sinai, Yahuah entered into covenant with Israel, and Torah supplied the instructions governing that relationship.
📖 Exodus 24:7 (KJV)
“And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that Yahuah hath said will we do, and be obedient.”
Torah addressed the whole life of the covenant community.
🕊️ WORSHIP
Sacrifices, appointed times, priestly service, and sanctuary matters.
⚖️ JUSTICE
Honest judgments, restitution, property disputes, and protection against oppression.
🤲 COMMUNITY
Care for the poor, stranger, widow, fatherless, and vulnerable.
🔥 HOLINESS
Purity, separation, worship, and set-apart living.
❤️ MORAL CONDUCT
Instructions concerning murder, theft, adultery, false witness, sexual conduct, honesty, and neighborly responsibility.
But these instructions were not all identical in function.
A command governing priestly service is not the same type of command as:
“Thou shalt not kill.”
Recognizing these distinctions is essential when determining how Torah relates to Yahusha Ha-Mashiach and the New Covenant.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
👑❤️ 5. TORAH REVEALS THE CHARACTER OF YAHUAH
Torah does more than regulate behavior.
It reveals something about the One giving the commandments.
📖 Psalm 19:7 (KJV)
“The law of Yahuah is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of Yahuah is sure, making wise the simple.”
📖 Leviticus 11:44 (KJV)
“For I am Yahuah your Elohim: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy.”
Yahuah’s instructions reveal His:
⚖️ Justice
❤️ Mercy
🔥 Holiness
🤝 Faithfulness
🛡️ Concern for the vulnerable
📏 Commitment to righteous judgment
His commandments against oppression reveal His concern for justice.
His instructions concerning honest weights and measures reveal His opposition to fraud.
His provisions for the poor reveal His compassion.
But an important distinction must also be maintained:
YAHUAH'S CHARACTER DOES NOT CHANGE SIMPLY BECAUSE A COVENANTAL ADMINISTRATION CHANGES.
A change involving priesthood, sacrifice, sanctuary, or covenant administration does not mean Yahuah has somehow become less holy, less righteous, or less just.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
🔟📜 6. THE TEN WORDS ARE CENTRAL—BUT THEY ARE NOT THE WHOLE TORAH
The Ten Commandments—also called the Ten Words—occupy a foundational place within the Sinai covenant.
📖 Exodus 20:1–17 | Deuteronomy 5:6–21
THE TEN WORDS
1. Have no other gods before Yahuah.
2. Do not make or worship idols.
3. Do not take Yahuah’s name in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
5. Honor your father and mother.
6. Do not murder.
7. Do not commit adultery.
8. Do not steal.
9. Do not bear false witness.
10. Do not covet.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
The Ten Words are foundational, but they do not replace everything else contained within Torah.
They exist within a much larger covenantal body of instruction.
Likewise, the familiar number 613 commandments is a later traditional enumeration of commandments found throughout Torah.
Scripture itself does not present Moses standing before Israel with a numbered checklist labeled:
“The 613 Commandments.”
That distinction becomes important when people reduce the entire Torah discussion to:
“613 became 10, and then Yahusha reduced 10 to 2.”
That oversimplification will require its own examination.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
❤️🌳 7. LOVE IS THE FOUNDATION—NOT THE ERASER
When Yahusha was asked about the greatest commandment, He answered directly from Torah.
📖 Matthew 22:37 (KJV)
“Thou shalt love Yahuah thy Elohim with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
This comes from Deuteronomy 6:5.
Then Yahusha said:
📖 Matthew 22:39 (KJV)
“Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
That comes from Leviticus 19:18.
Yahusha was not replacing Torah with a new philosophy called love.
He was quoting Torah to explain Torah.
Then He said:
📖 Matthew 22:40 (KJV)
“On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Notice the word:
HANG.
Something that hangs from something else has not necessarily ceased to exist.
It depends upon its foundation.
The commandments concerning our relationship with Yahuah hang upon love for Yahuah.
The commandments concerning our relationship with other people hang upon love for our neighbor.
🌳 LOVE IS THE ROOT.
🍎 THE COMMANDMENTS DESCRIBE THE FRUIT.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
👑📖 8. WHAT DID YAHUSHA SAY ABOUT TORAH?
Yahusha’s own words must be allowed into the discussion.
📖 Matthew 5:17 (KJV)
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
He subsequently warned about breaking commandments and teaching others to do likewise.
📖 Matthew 5:19
Yahusha also confronted human traditions that displaced Yahuah’s commandments.
📖 Mark 7:9 (KJV)
“Full well ye reject the commandment of Elohim, that ye may keep your own tradition.”
But the word “fulfil” must not be reduced to a theological slogan.
The New Testament presents Yahusha as fulfilling the Law and the Prophets through His:
🕊️ Life
📖 Teaching
🩸 Death
🌅 Resurrection
👑 Priestly ministry
The real question is therefore not simply whether Yahusha fulfilled Torah.
He did.
The deeper question is:
WHAT DOES HIS FULFILLMENT MEAN FOR EACH ASPECT OF COVENANT LIFE?
The sacrificial system, priesthood, covenant administration, holiness, morality, and obedience must each be examined within the whole testimony of Scripture.
Those distinctions should be studied—not assumed away.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
🕊️⚖️ 9. GRACE DOES NOT MAKE OBEDIENCE MEANINGLESS
Paul is explicit that sinners are not justified by performing works of the Law.
📖 Romans 3:28 (KJV)
“Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
But Paul does not stop there.
Only a few verses later he asks:
📖 Romans 3:31 (KJV)
“Do we then make void the law through faith? Elohim forbid: yea, we establish the law.”
Paul distinguishes between:
❌ Using Torah as a mechanism for earning justification
and
✅ Recognizing Torah's proper function within Yahuah's revelation
Romans 7:12 describes the Law as:
Holy.
The commandment as:
Holy, just, and good.
This does not automatically settle every question concerning how individual Mosaic commandments function under the New Covenant.
But it does establish something important:
📌 GRACE AND OBEDIENCE ARE NOT AUTOMATIC ENEMIES.
Grace is not permission to rebel.
And obedience is not automatically an attempt to purchase salvation.
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
🫀📜 10. THE NEW COVENANT: INSTRUCTION WRITTEN ON THE HEART
The promise of the New Covenant appears in Jeremiah.
📖 Jeremiah 31:33 (KJV)
“I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their Elohim, and they shall be my people.”
Hebrews 8:10 repeats this promise.
Notice where Yahuah places His instruction:
🫀 INWARDLY.
The imagery emphasizes transformation of the heart rather than merely external possession of commandments.
But another distinction is necessary.
The New Covenant is not simply Sinai repeated without any change whatsoever.
Hebrews describes:
✦ A new priesthood
✦ A better covenant
✦ A superior sacrifice
✦ Yahusha's once-for-all offering
✦ A transformed covenantal administration
At the same time, instruction written upon the heart means the New Covenant cannot reasonably be characterized as lawlessness.
Therefore the better question is:
🔥 HOW DOES THE COMPLETED WORK OF YAHUSHA TRANSFORM THE COVENANTAL ADMINISTRATION OF YAHUAH'S INSTRUCTION?
That question is more precise than either extreme:
❌ “Everything was abolished.”
or
❌ “Nothing whatsoever changed.”
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
⚖️ 11. WHAT TORAH IS—AND WHAT TORAH IS NOT
✅ TORAH IS:
📜 Divine instruction
⚖️ Covenant law
🔥 A revelation of Yahuah's holiness
❤️ A revelation of His justice, mercy, and righteousness
📖 The foundational five books of Scripture when used in its broad Pentateuchal sense
🧭 Instruction showing Yahuah's covenant people how to walk
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
❌ TORAH IS NOT:
💰 A means of purchasing salvation
⛓️ Merely a collection of arbitrary restrictions
📋 A word that means exactly the same body of commandments in every biblical passage
❤️ An enemy of grace simply because it contains commandments
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
🔎 TORAH MUST BE INTERPRETED ACCORDING TO:
📖 Literary context
🤝 Covenant setting
👥 Original audience
🏛️ Historical function
📜 The testimony of the prophets
👑 Its fulfillment in Yahusha Ha-Mashiach
⚔️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━📜━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━⚔️
🔥 THE FINAL WORD: DO NOT REJECT WHAT YOU HAVE NOT YET UNDERSTOOD
Before declaring Torah a burden, examine what Scripture actually says Torah is.
Before declaring every Mosaic command applicable in precisely the same manner today, examine its covenantal context and the work of the Messiah.
Do not begin with a denomination.
Do not begin with tradition.
Do not begin with an Internet slogan.
BEGIN WITH THE TEXT.
Yahuah's instruction reveals His ways.
His grace provides mercy we cannot earn.
His Spirit transforms the heart.
And genuine faith produces a life that desires to obey Him.
📖 Psalm 119:1 (KJV)
“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of Yahuah.”
📖 John 14:15 (KJV)
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
So the question is not:
LAW OR GRACE?
The biblical question is whether we will receive the whole counsel of Yahuah without turning His instruction into a means of self-salvation—
or turning His grace into permission for rebellion.
