TRP Biblical Anthropology infographic illustrating body, soul, and spirit: the body formed from dust, the soul as the living person, and the spirit as breath from Yahuah.

📜 01. Body, Soul & Spirit: What Is Man?

A Biblical Anthropology of the Whole Person

TRP Biblical Studies™ | Study Domain I: Humanity, Identity, and Hebrew Worldview | Biblical Anthropology™ Article 01

Author: King Titius Justus™ (KTJ)

“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”
— Psalm 8:4, KJV

Scripture quotations preserve the KJV wording. Yahuah and Yahusha are used in the commentary. Hebrew terms are interpreted according to their biblical context. Historical, theological, and philosophical traditions, when discussed, are identified as such and are not treated as equal to the biblical text.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🔥 BEFORE WE CAN UNDERSTAND HOW MAN SHOULD LIVE, WE MUST FIRST UNDERSTAND WHAT MAN IS

What exactly is a human being?

Are we physical bodies that happen to possess souls?

Are we spirits temporarily inhabiting bodies?

Are the body, soul, and spirit three completely separate components?

Or does Scripture describe human nature in a more interconnected way?

Popular diagrams often divide mankind neatly into three categories:

🫀 BODY — flesh, bones, blood, and physical needs
🧠 SOUL — intellect, emotion, and will
🔥 SPIRIT — conscience, worship, and communion with Yahuah

There is biblical truth behind some of these distinctions. Scripture can speak distinctly of body, soul, and spirit.

But Scripture also uses these terms with considerable overlap.

Therefore, if we want a genuinely biblical anthropology, we cannot simply inherit a diagram and attach Bible verses to it.

We must return to Scripture.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🌿 1. THE CREATION OF MAN BEGINS WITH DUST AND BREATH

The foundational passage is Genesis 2:7:

Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Rendered with the divine name in commentary:

Yahuah Elohim formed man from the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

Notice the sequence:

🪨 Dust of the ground → the formed physical man
💨 Breath of life → life given by Yahuah
🧍 Living soul → the man becomes a living being

This is extremely important.

Genesis does not simply say that Yahuah placed a “soul” inside a biological machine.

It says:

“Man became a living soul.”

The Hebrew word translated soul is נֶפֶשׁ — nephesh.

In biblical Hebrew, nephesh has a broader semantic range than the common modern idea of an invisible entity residing inside the body. Depending upon context, the word can refer to a living creature, person, life, self, appetite, or desire.

Genesis 2:7 therefore begins biblical anthropology with the living human being as a whole.

Man is formed from the earth.

His life comes from Yahuah.

And by the breath of his Creator, he becomes a living nephesh.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🫀 2. THE BODY — OUR EARTHLY, PHYSICAL EXISTENCE

Scripture presents man's physical existence as intentional creation.

Yahuah formed mankind from the earth.

Genesis 3:19 (KJV)
“...for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

Our physical existence includes:

🩸 Blood
🦴 Bones
🫀 Organs
💪 Flesh
🧠 Nervous system
👁️ Physical senses

Because the body is physical, it also has legitimate physical needs:

🍞 Food
💧 Water
🏠 Shelter
😴 Sleep
🏃 Movement
🧼 Cleanliness
🩺 Physical care

These things are not inherently unspiritual.

Yahuah created physical humanity within a physical creation, and Genesis records:

Genesis 1:31 (KJV)
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”

The biblical hope is therefore not ultimately an escape from physical existence.

It includes resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:42 (KJV)
“So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption.”

The body matters because Yahuah created it.

And Scripture's resurrection hope declares that mortality and corruption will not have the final word.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🧠 3. THE SOUL — WHAT DOES NEPHESH ACTUALLY MEAN?

Modern diagrams frequently define the soul as:

Mind + Will + Emotions

That can be a useful teaching shorthand.

But it should not be mistaken for a complete biblical definition of nephesh.

Genesis says:

Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
“...and man became a living soul.”

The man himself is described as a living soul.

The Hebrew concept of nephesh can encompass dimensions of:

🧠 Thought
❤️ Emotion
⚖️ Choice
🔥 Desire
🗣️ Personal identity
🌿 Life itself

Yet biblical Hebrew does not always dissect human faculties into the rigid compartments familiar from later philosophical and psychological systems.

This matters because we can accidentally force Scripture into a diagram rather than allowing Scripture to define its own categories.

The biblical human being functions as an integrated person.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

💨 4. THE SPIRIT — RUACH

The Hebrew word רוּחַ — ruach can mean:

wind, breath, or spirit.

Context determines how the word is being used.

That range of meaning produces powerful biblical imagery.

Wind is invisible, yet its effects can be unmistakable.

Breath cannot be permanently retained, yet without breath physical life ceases.

Scripture also speaks of the spirit of man in relation to the One who gave life.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 (KJV)
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”

Notice again the relationship between Creator and creature.

🪨 The dust returns to the earth.

💨 The spirit returns unto the One who gave it.

Paul likewise writes:

Romans 8:16 (KJV)
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

The human spirit therefore occupies an important place in Scripture's description of mankind's relationship with Yahuah.

🕊️━━━━🔥━━━━🕊️

🙏 5. WORSHIP MUST BE IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH

Yahusha declared:

John 4:23–24 (KJV)
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

True worship cannot be reduced to outward religious performance.

A person may:

📖 read Scripture,
🎶 sing songs,
🕎 observe religious practices,
🗣️ speak religious language,

while the heart remains distant from Yahuah.

Yahusha warned:

Matthew 15:8 (KJV)
“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

Biblical worship therefore demands more than external activity.

The inward person must correspond with the outward confession.

Spirit and truth belong together.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

❤️ 6. WHERE DOES THE HEART FIT?

This is one of the places where simple body-soul-spirit diagrams become insufficient.

Scripture frequently attributes functions to the heart that modern diagrams might assign exclusively to the mind or soul.

The Hebrew לֵב / לֵבָב — lev / levav can encompass thought, understanding, desire, intention, and moral disposition.

Consider:

Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he...”

And:

Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

The biblical heart can:

🧠 think
❤️ desire
⚖️ choose
🪨 become hardened
🕎 turn toward Yahuah

This demonstrates something important about biblical anthropology:

Modern categories often separate thinking, feeling, desiring, and willing more sharply than biblical Hebrew terminology does.

Scripture frequently describes the human person holistically.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

⚔️ 7. DOES SCRIPTURE REALLY TEACH BODY + SOUL + SPIRIT?

There are passages in which all three terms appear distinctly.

One of the clearest is:

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)
“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

In our commentary terminology, the passage concerns the coming of our Master Yahusha Ha-Mashiach.

Hebrews likewise says:

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit...”

These passages demonstrate that soul and spirit can be distinguished conceptually.

But we should be careful about what conclusion we draw from that distinction.

They do not necessarily establish that every biblical description of humanity must fit into three completely independent compartments.

📜 Scripture distinguishes the terms.

⚠️ Scripture does not provide a complete anatomical diagram of the invisible human person.

That distinction protects us from claiming more than the biblical text establishes.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🔥 8. THE FLESH IS MORE THAN SKIN AND MUSCLE

Another important distinction concerns the biblical concept of flesh.

In some passages, flesh refers straightforwardly to physical flesh.

But particularly in Paul's writings, “flesh” can also describe humanity functioning according to sinful desires rather than obedience to Yahuah.

Galatians 5:16 (KJV)
“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

Paul continues:

Galatians 5:17 (KJV)
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh...”

We therefore should not construct this equation:

❌ BODY = FLESH = EVIL

That would confuse distinct biblical concepts.

The physical body is part of Yahuah's creation.

The problem is sin and corrupted desire, not physical existence itself.

That distinction also helps protect biblical anthropology from philosophies that treat matter or embodiment as inherently inferior.

🕎━━━━⚔️━━━━🕎

🧭 9. HOW SHOULD THE WHOLE PERSON LIVE?

Although Scripture does not give us a mechanical diagram of human nature, it does reveal how the whole person should live before Yahuah.

🔥 SPIRIT — ORIENTED TOWARD YAHUAH

Prayer, worship, obedience, and fellowship continually direct us toward our Creator.

🧠 INNER PERSON — RENEWED BY TRUTH

Our thinking, desires, emotions, and decisions must increasingly conform to truth.

Romans 12:2 (KJV)
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...”

🫀 BODY — PRESENTED FOR RIGHTEOUS SERVICE

Paul writes immediately beforehand:

Romans 12:1 (KJV)
“...present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

We can therefore express a useful discipleship pattern:

🔥 Life oriented toward Yahuah
↓
🧠 Mind, heart, desires, and choices transformed by truth
↓
🫀 Physical life expressed through obedience

But this distinction is important:

This is a discipleship model derived from biblical principles—not a claim that Scripture provides an anatomical flowchart of the human person.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🌾 10. THE WHOLE PERSON REQUIRES STEWARDSHIP

Biblical spirituality does not require neglecting the physical in pursuit of the spiritual.

🫀 CARE FOR THE BODY

🍞 Nourishment
💧 Hydration
😴 Rest
🏃 Movement
🧼 Cleanliness
🩺 Responsible physical care

🧠 CULTIVATE THE INNER PERSON

📖 Truth
🧠 Wisdom
🎓 Learning
❤️ Forgiveness
🤝 Healthy relationships
⚖️ Discipline
🎯 Purpose

🔥 CULTIVATE LIFE TOWARD YAHUAH

🙏 Prayer
📜 Scripture
🎶 Worship
🕊️ Faith
⚔️ Obedience
🤝 Fellowship
🕎 Set-apart living

Yahusha declared:

Matthew 4:4 (KJV)
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Bread sustains physical life.

But bread cannot provide everything mankind needs.

Humanity was created to live in dependence upon Yahuah.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

👑 11. CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF ELOHIM

Human identity ultimately begins with the Creator.

Genesis 1:27 (KJV)
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

This truth establishes extraordinary human dignity.

Yet it also requires interpretive caution.

Some theological diagrams attempt to make humanity's body-soul-spirit distinction a direct structural analogy for the nature of Elohim.

Scripture does not explicitly make that equation.

Genesis declares that mankind was created in the image of Elohim, but it does not say:

“Body, soul, and spirit correspond to three divisions within Elohim.”

That conclusion goes beyond the statement of Genesis.

Our understanding of Yahuah must therefore arise from passages addressing His nature, rather than constructing His nature from a human anthropology diagram.

📜 Analogy may illustrate doctrine.

⚠️ Analogy should not create doctrine.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🌅 12. THE GOAL IS THE REDEMPTION OF THE WHOLE PERSON

Biblical redemption does not culminate in the permanent abandonment of the body.

Scripture looks forward to resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:53 (KJV)
“For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.”

Paul likewise writes:

Philippians 3:20–21 (KJV)
“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body...”

In our commentary, we identify that Savior as Yahusha Ha-Mashiach.

The biblical story therefore moves from:

🌿 CREATION
↓
🍎 FALL
↓
🩸 REDEMPTION
↓
👑 RESURRECTION
↓
🌅 RESTORATION

The body is not discarded as meaningless.

The whole human person belongs to Yahuah.

🕎━━━━🔥━━━━🕎

📜 FINAL REFLECTION — WHAT IS MAN?

The question of Psalm 8 remains profound:

“What is man, that thou art mindful of him?”

Man is dust—

yet Yahuah breathed life into him.

Man is mortal—

yet he was created in the image of Elohim.

Man possesses physical appetites—

yet bread alone cannot satisfy him.

Man thinks, feels, desires, and chooses—

yet his inner life must be transformed by truth.

Man can worship—

yet true worship must be in spirit and in truth.

And although death returns the body to dust, Scripture points beyond mortality toward resurrection.

The biblical vision of humanity therefore cannot be reduced merely to:

BODY + SOUL + SPIRIT

as though mankind were simply a machine assembled from three detachable components.

Scripture gives us something richer.

It presents the whole human person as created by Yahuah, dependent upon Yahuah, accountable to Yahuah, and subject to His redemptive purpose.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)
“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly...”

🫀 BODY — steward it.
🧠 SOUL — understand it according to Scripture.
🔥 SPIRIT — turn toward Yahuah.
❤️ HEART — keep it diligently.
📜 WORD — allow it to judge everything.
👑 YAHUAH — let Him govern the whole man.
