📜 06. When Skin Color Becomes a Stumbling Block

A Plain-Language Look at Prejudice, Truth & Receiving Yahusha Ha-Mashiach

🔥 THE SIMPLE POINT

Here is the plain truth: a person can become so committed to racial hatred that they reject truth before they even examine it.

If someone says, “I could never follow a Messiah who looked like those people,” the main problem is not the Messiah’s appearance. The problem is the hatred in that person’s heart.

Skin color is not a measure of righteousness, intelligence, worth, or closeness to Yahuah. It is part of human physical variety. Yahuah created mankind; mankind created many of the prideful divisions, labels, and prejudices that now keep people apart.

“But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.”
— James 2:9 KJV

📜 WHAT WE CAN SAY—AND WHAT WE SHOULD NOT PRETEND TO KNOW

Yahusha Ha-Mashiach was an Israelite man who lived in the land of Israel in the first century. That is historically and scripturally sound.

But Scripture does not give a modern racial label—such as “Black,” “Arab,” “Caucasian,” or “Asian”—as a complete description of Him. Those are modern social categories, not the categories used by the biblical writers.

Nor does Scripture give us permission to make an exact portrait, complexion, or facial-feature argument into a test of faith. The Gospels emphasize His words, works, obedience, death, resurrection, and authority. They do not provide a detailed earthly portrait for people to worship or fight over.

So the careful position is this:

  • Do not use a false document or stretched verse to claim certainty about every physical feature of Yahusha.
  • Do not make Europeanized religious artwork the standard of truth.
  • Do not use anti-Black, anti-Arab, anti-Asian, or any other racial hatred as a shield against evidence.
  • Do receive the Messiah according to the witness Yahuah has given: His truth, His character, His authority, and His fulfilled purpose.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🎨 WHY IS A DARK-SKINNED DEPICTION OF YAHUSHA ACCEPTABLE?

The answer is simple: a depiction is an artist’s representation; it is not a new verse of Scripture.

For centuries, European artists made Yahusha look European. Many of those works gave Him pale skin, European facial features, and hair unlike that of a first-century Israelite man. Those paintings were repeatedly used in churches, books, films, and homes. Yet people rarely ask whether a white depiction has been “authorized” by Scripture.

So why should a dark-skinned depiction be treated as uniquely improper?

It should not.

Yahusha was not a northern European man. He was an Israelite from the land of Israel, born into a people living in the ancient Near East. Scripture does not state His exact shade, but neither does it establish a pale European portrait as the default. Therefore, a dark-skinned depiction does not contradict Scripture simply because it does not match a European religious image.

The proper standard must be the same for every image:

  • An image may be used as art, teaching illustration, or a visual attempt to restore historical context.
  • An image must not be presented as a photograph, a revelation, or proof of Yahusha’s exact complexion.
  • An image must not be worshipped, prayed to, or made into an idol.
  • An image must not be used to make one people superior or another people less human.

That is the line. A dark-skinned portrayal is not wrong because it is dark-skinned. A white portrayal is not true merely because it has become familiar. Neither canvas is Scripture.

🕊️ DOES SCRIPTURE FORBID ALL VISUAL ART?

No. The commandment forbids making an image in order to bow down to it or serve it. It does not erase the difference between art and idolatry.

Yahuah Himself commanded crafted cherubim for the mercy seat:

“And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold… in the two ends of the mercy seat shalt thou make the cherubims.”
— Exodus 25:18 KJV

This settles the principle: the issue is not simply whether an image exists. The issue is whether people give an image the worship, authority, or power that belongs only to Yahuah.

So a painting or digital design portraying Yahusha with dark skin is permissible as visual art. It becomes wrong only if the artist or viewer turns it into an idol, claims it is an exact revealed portrait, or uses it to spread hatred.

⚖️ THE DOUBLE STANDARD MUST END

No race owns the Messiah’s face.

No inherited church painting is the authorized portrait of Yahusha.

And no person has the right to condemn a dark-skinned depiction merely because they have been trained to accept only a European-looking one.

If the objection is not applied equally to every racialized image of the Messiah, it is not a biblical standard. It is a double standard.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🧱 WHY HATRED CAN BLIND A PERSON

Prejudice works like a locked door. Once a person decides that a certain group is beneath them, they may refuse to hear anything associated with that group—even if it is true.

That is why hatred is spiritually dangerous. It does not merely harm the person being hated. It also corrupts the judgment of the person doing the hating.

Imagine someone saying, “If Yahusha does not look like the picture in my mind, I will reject Him.” That person has made an image, an expectation, or a racial preference into an idol. They are demanding that the Messiah fit their prejudice rather than allowing Yahuah’s truth to correct them.

“For Yahuah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Yahuah looketh on the heart.”
— 1 Samuel 16:7 KJV

This does not mean outward appearance is meaningless. It means human beings are poor judges when they make outward appearance the final test of a person’s worth.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

👑 WHAT ABOUT HIS APPEARANCE WHEN HE RETURNS?

We should speak humbly here. Scripture portrays Yahusha’s return in glory, power, judgment, and kingship—not as a debate over modern racial boxes.

Revelation 1 contains a visionary description of the glorified Son of man. It is not a license to force modern racial categories onto the vision. At His appearing, the central question will not be, “Did He match my preferred picture?” The question will be whether we recognized and obeyed His truth.

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him…”
— Revelation 1:7 KJV

No one should build their faith upon guessing the Messiah’s exact appearance at His return. We are called to be ready for the King—not attached to an image that makes us comfortable.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🤝 THE TEST IS NOT YOUR PREFERENCE—IT IS YOUR HEART

Yahuah does not approve partiality. Peter learned this plainly:

“Of a truth I perceive that Yahuah is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”
— Acts 10:34–35 KJV

That does not erase peoples, histories, or the real suffering caused by racism. It establishes a righteous standard: no person is to be despised because of ethnicity, nation, or complexion.

If someone cannot honor a faithful person because that person is dark-skinned, light-skinned, or from another people, they have a heart problem that must be brought before Yahuah. And if they would reject Yahusha for failing to match their racial preference, then they are revealing that they have valued an image over the Messiah Himself.

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

⚔️ A WORD TO EVERY SIDE

This truth corrects everybody.

It corrects those who use a white European image as though it were Scripture.

It corrects those who use a racial argument to shame or dehumanize others.

It corrects those who invent evidence to “win” an identity debate.

And it corrects anyone who thinks the color of another person’s skin gives them a reason to hate, mock, exclude, or dismiss them.

Truth does not need racial hatred to defend it. Yahusha does not need false evidence. The Word of Yahuah is strong enough to stand on what is true.

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
— John 8:32 KJV

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

🕊️ THE BOTTOM LINE

We should not claim more than Scripture proves about Yahusha’s physical appearance. But we can say this with confidence:

Anyone who hates people because of skin color is allowing hatred to interfere with their ability to receive truth.

The Messiah is not coming to satisfy human prejudice. He is coming as King, Judge, and Redeemer. The wise response is not to ask whether He will fit our preferred image. The wise response is to repent, walk in truth, love righteousness, and be ready to meet Him.

“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”
— Matthew 24:44 KJV

⚔️━━━━📜━━━━⚔️

📌 CLOSING DECLARATION

Do not let skin color become a stumbling block between you and truth.

Do not worship an image. Do not defend history with lies. Do not carry hatred in the name of righteousness.

Receive Yahusha Ha-Mashiach for who Scripture reveals Him to be—and let Yahuah correct every prejudice in the heart.
